Transportation Options for Seniors & Residents with Special Needs

Transportation is a key to independence and participation.  Options include:
       Buses
       Door-to-Door Services

BUSES:

LEXPRESS 
Lexington's neighborhood, mini-bus service.  All buses are wheelchair equipped and ADA compliant.

The Lexpress staff is happy to introduce seniors to Lexington’s in-town bus service by accompanying a rider on the bus or by responding to telephone inquires. Call the Lexpress office to speak to the staff about schedules and routes at 781-861-1210.

  • There are six routes, and each route runs once per hour.
  • Service is on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 6:25 p.m.
  • LEXPRESS connects with the MBTA, Burlington B-Line, & Lowell Regional Transit.
  • Route #1 stops at the back of the Senior Center weekdays at 12:48 PM, 1:48 PM, and upon request.
  • You can ride LEXPRESS to Stop & Shop, Market Basket, Lahey Lexington, and Burlington Mall.

Fare:$.75 Senior (65+).    Annual Senior Pass (July through June): $125. 
  Transfers within the LEXPRESS system are $.25. 
  For riders on Route #5 going between Lexington and Burlington, a $.25 surcharge applies.

MBTA 
As part of the regional bus system, Routes #62 and #76 serve Lexington and provide a link to Boston via the subway's Red Line at Alewife.

Fare: Senior ID card (65+) and TAP card (special needs) reduced fares.  Cards are issued by the MBTA.

Housing Villages Stop & Shop Bus
On Tuesdays and Fridays, a C&W school bus transports residents from the three Lexington Housing Villages to Stop & Shop. 
  Tuesday -  the Lexington Stop & Shop 
  Friday - the Bedford Stop & Shop.

  • The service begins at 8:50 a.m. at Countryside Village followed by stops at Vynebrooke and Greeley.
  • The bus leaves Stop & Shop at 10:30 a.m. to return to each of the villages.

Fare: FREE, compliments of Stop & Shop


DOOR TO DOOR SERVICES:

MBTA "THE RIDE"
Residents with mobility limitations who are unable to use public transport are eligible.

  • The application process includes input from a health care professional. Human Services Department staff can assist with applications.
  • MBTA processing period is one month.

THE RIDE operates from 6AM to 1AM every day. Rides are scheduled in advance.

Fare: $2.00 each way for local trips. 
  NO tipping is allowed.

FISH of Lexington
Rides to medical appointments, primarily in the Lexington area, are provided by volunteers for seniors who do not have alternative transportation.

  • FISH rides are limited to one ride per week and are based on volunteer availability. 
  • Rides must be scheduled at least two days in advance.  Call 781-861-9300 between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. two operating days before your appointment date. FISH is closed Saturdays and Sundays and on workday holidays.
  • Please note that during the months of June, July, and August, there is no transportation provided on Fridays.

FISH is a free service.

Taxis
No taxi service currently holds a Lexington permit. Local taxi companies are:

American Cancer Society
For those in need of transportation to cancer treatments, please contact the American Cancer Society at 800-ACS-2345.

Disabled American Veterans of America
Volunteer drivers offer rides to disabled veterans who have medical appointments scheduled at military facilities or Veterans' Administration hospitals.

Check with your place of worship to find out if rides may be available from members.
