Tourism and Visitor Services have recently become formally recognized as a function of the Economic Development Department. Increasing visitors to the Town generates business activity that improves the overall economy and increases the vibrancy of our Center.
Our annual hotel and meals tax has averaged $1.33 million dollars over the last few years. We recognize that visitors have been a contributing factor to this revenue source.
The Visitors Center is often the first stop for visitors in Lexington. it serves as the Gateway of Hospitality, Information, Tourism and Cultural Resources." Approximately 124,000 people came through the doors in 2015, a 20% increase from last year. Revenues from merchandise underwrite most of the Town's cost to staff and operate the Visitors Center.
That spending supported 821 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $78,188.,700.
Report authors this year produced an interactive tool. Users can explore current year visitor spending, jobs, labor income, value added, and output effects by sector for national, state, and local economies. Users can also view year-by-year trend data. The interactive tool and report are available at the NPS Social Science Program webpage.
