Massachusetts Residential Energy Code Training: Residential Stretch Code Overview

Updates to the Residential Stretch Energy Code went into effect on January 1, 2023 and the Municipal Opt-In Specialized Code will go into effect on January 1, 2024 for many MA communities that have voted to adopt it. The Towns of Acton, Concord, and Lexington are hosting two in-person trainings for building professionals that will cover the recent and upcoming changes to the codes and what it means for your work.

For Building Professionals Working in Acton, Concord, or Lexington

Updates to the Residential Stretch Energy Code went into effect on January 1, 2023, and the Municipal Opt-In Specialized Code will go into effect on January 1, 2024, for many MA communities that have voted to adopt it. The Towns of Acton, Concord, and Lexington are hosting two in-person trainings for building professionals that will cover the recent and upcoming changes to the codes and what it means for your work.

The trainings will be run by PSD Consulting and have been approved for continuing education for MA code officials and CSL licensees. See detailed course descriptions below—please note that discussion of the new Specialized Code will be covered in Course 1.

The trainings are free for participants, but registration is required and attendance will be capped at 50 participants.

2023 Residential Stretch Code Overview (1 hour)

On January 1, 2023, the new residential stretch energy code took effect. This new energy code had no concurrency period. This presentation will highlight the salient changes to the stretch energy code. Topics discussed will include changes to compliance path options, new requirements for prescriptive path users, and changes to ERI and Passive House documentation requirements along with mandatory requirements and additional efficiency packages. Changes to Solar readiness and Electric Vehicle wiring will be discussed. The new Municipal Opt-in Specialized Code will also be addressed.

2023 Residential Stretch Code mandatory requirements and additional efficiency packages (1 hour)

This module will review new code provisions in the Massachusetts 10th Edition and significant changes between 2018 and 2021 IECC. The first portion of the program covers new mandatory requirements of the code and additional efficiency packages. Time will be spent discussing new requirements since the 2018 IECC. Discuss what additional efficiency packages can be used on stretch code jobs.

2023 Residential Stretch Code Solar Ready and EV Ready (1 hour) 

The first portion of the program covers new solar-ready provisions including scope, solar-ready rooftop area requirements, exceptions, roof orientations, documentation, interconnection pathways and roof loads, and electrical requirements. The second portion of the course covers EV ready requirements, including number of parking spaces, wiring requirements, and exceptions. Frequently asked questions for both topics will also be addressed.
