Battle Green

Lexington's Battle Green is the location of the the Battle of Lexington that took place on the morning of April 19, 1775. The Board of Selectmen manage the use of Battle Green consistent with its nature and history.

The flag on the Battle Green is authorized to be flown 24 hours a day year-round. The Selectmen have authorized lowering the flag based on their Policy on Lowering the Battle Green Flag on the following occasions:

February 22, 2018 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in respect for Massachusetts State Representative Peter Kocot who passed away on February 22, 2018.

February 15-19, 2018 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in respect for the victims of the terrible act of violence perpetuated on February 14, 2018 in Parkland, Florida. 

February 16, 2018 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Private First Class William Becket Kiernan, USMC, of Rochester, MA who died on Sunday, February 4, 2018. 

January 11, 2018 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Private First Class  Evan G. Kasabian, US Army, of Tyngsboro, MA who died on Saturday, December 30, 2017.

December 11, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Fire Chief Stephen P. Frye of Montgomery, Massachusetts, who died in the line of duty on December 6, 2017.

December 7, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.

November 20th The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of SPC Donny Nguyen of Quincy, MA who passed on November 13, 2017 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

November 16, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Captain Thomas J. Hudner Jr., USN (Ret), Recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor - Korean War.

November 9, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in respect for the victims of the senseless act of violence perpetrated on November 5, 2017 in Sutherland Springs, Texas.

October 15, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Second Lieutenant Richard M. Horwitz, U.S. Army/Airforce 716th Bomber Squadron, 449th Bombardment Group.

October 9, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Lexington resident and Korean War Veteran Carroll E. Dolan. Mr. Dolan would have celebrated his 87th birthday on October 9th.

October 8, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service and in accordance with U.S. Public law 107-51.

October 4, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of SPC Raymond C. Wise, United States Army, of Dorchester, MA who passed away September 22, 2017 at Fort Bliss, Texas, in a training accident.

October 2-6, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in respect for the victims of the senseless act of violence perpetrated on October 1, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

September 11, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of the individuals who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and the Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice in the wars that followed.

August 3, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of George Gabriel, Past Commander of the Lexington Minuteman who played the role of Captain Parker for over 30 years in the Patriots Day reenactment.

August 2, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Navy Yeoman 3rd Class Edmund T. Ryan, a Massachusetts combat verteran who served on the USS Oklahoma and was killed at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

July 29, 2017  The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Ephraim Weiss, a Town Meeting member for over fifty years.

May 29, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Memorial Day.

May 15, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day.

May 4, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of SSG Michael J. Mantenuto, HHC - 1st Special Forces Group - Fort Lewis, WA of Holliston, Massachusetts.

April 6, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered as a mark of respect for Senator and Astronaut John Glen.

April 6, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered to recognize the passing of life-long Lexington resident and veteran Aurio Pierro.

April 3, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Massachusetts State Senator Kenneth J. Donnelly, Fourth Middlesex district, of Arlington.

March 31, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of CPL Jules Hauterman, Jr. MIA 1950 - 2016.

March 22, 2017 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Firefighter Joseph Toscano of the Watertown Fire Department who died in the line of duty on Friday, March 17, 2017.

December 13, 2016 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Edith "Edie" Sandy, a Town Meeting member for over forty-five years.

July 8-12, 2016 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of the five fallen Police Officers in Dallas, TX.

July 1, 2016 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew Clement United States Navy, of Beverly, MA who passed away on June 21, 2016.

June 18, 2016 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of SPC Bernardino Guevara Jr. United States Army, of Roxbury, MA who passed away on June 6, 2016.

June 13-16, 2016 The Battle Green Flag was lowered as a mark of respect for the victims of the violence perpetrated on June 12, 2016, in Orlando Florida.

May 30, 2016 The Battle Green Flag was lowered from sunrise until Noon in honor of Memorial Day.

May 23-27, 2016 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Auburn Police Officer Ronald Tarentino who was killed in the line of duty on May 22, 2016.

May 15, 2016 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Peace Officers' Memorial Day for law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or became disabled in the performance of their duty.

April 29, 2016 The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Corporal Christopher J. Orlando, United States Marine Corps, of Hingham, MA who died in the two helicopter crash off the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii on Thursday, January 14, 2016.

March 30, 2016 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of former Police Captain James Kilmartin who passed away on March 22, 2016.

March 23, 2016 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered as a mark of respect for the victims of the senseless acts of violence perpetrated on March 22, 2016, in Brussels. 

March 17, 2016 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Massachusetts State Trooper Thomas L. Clardy of Hudson who died on March 16 in the line of duty.

March 2, 2016 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Major Glenn G. Milliken, Massachusetts Air National Guard, of Wilbraham, MA who passed away on February 23, 2016.

February 16, 2016 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered as a mark of respect for United States Associate Justice Antonin Scalia, who died on February 13, 2016.

December 23, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Robert Cataldo, for member of the Board of Selectmen.

December 3, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered on in honor of the victims of the San Bernardino, California Shooting on December 2, 2015.

September 12, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Specialist David Hazen Johnston, United States Army, of Lexington, MA who died on August 12, 2015.

September 11, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of all those who lost their lives on 9/11.

July 17, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of the four United States Marines killed in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

June 30, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of David F. Eagle who passed away on June 20, 2015.  He was a member of the Lexington Housing Assistance Board since its inception.  He was a very caring member of the Lexington Community who contributed his help whenever and wherever it was needed.

May 29, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Joe R. Medlin who passed away on May 26, 2015.  He retired after working for the Lexington DPW for 33 years, ending his career as Manager of Operations.

May 15, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Peace Officers' Memorial Dayfor law enforcement officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their community or became disabled in the performance of their duty.

April 16, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered for the memorial service and in memory ofElsa Sullivan who passed away on March 30, 2015.  Elsa was the White Tricorn Hat Recipient in 2005 and was well known for her colorful outfits, dazzling jewelry, rabbit's head cane and her white gloves.

April 15, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered on the 2nd anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing in honor of the individuals who lost their lives and were injured on April 15, 2013.

March 14, 2015 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Robert B. Kent who passed away on February 5, 2015.  He was active in the Lexington Community for over 60 years, including serving as Town Moderator from 1965-1970 and as a Selectmen from 1977-1981.

September 11, 2014 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered for remembrance of the anniversary of 9/11.

September 10, 2014 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Gary Alan Ganley who passed away on September 7, 2014.  He was a long-time employee of the Lexington Public Works Department and part of his job included taking care of the Battle Green.

June 18, 2014 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Richard D. Abrams who passed away on June 15, 2014.  He was a member of the Sustainable Lexington Committee and the Greenway Corridors Committee and helped create ACROSS Lexington, which is a network of pedestrian and bicycle routes through open space and town streets that link many parts of the town.

April 28, 2014 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Harold T. Laye, Jr. who passed away on April 25, 2014. He was a Lexington resident and U.S. Air Force Veteran of the Korean War.

April 15, 2014 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered on April 15, 2014 in honor of the individuals who lost their lives and were injured during the Boston Marathon Bombings on April 15, 2013.

March 29, 2014 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered on March 29, 2014 for the memorial service held in memory of Richard Battin, who passed away on February 8, 2014.

December 6-9, 2013 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Nelson Mandela who passed away on December 5, 2013

November 22, 2013 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered for the National Day of Remembrance for President John F. Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

September 17, 2013 to September 20, 2013 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered out of respect for the victims of the violence perpetrated at the Washington Navy Yard on September 16, 2013.

September 11, 2013 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered for remembrance on the anniversary of 9/11.

July 26, 2013 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Robert M. Hutchinson who passed away on July 21, 2013.  He was Lexington's Town Manager from 1976 to 1987.

April 16-22, 2013 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor or all the victims affected by the Marathon Bombing on April 15, 2013.

March 16, 2013 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Francis W.K. Smith who was an original member of the Conservation Commission and responsible for helping to obtain many parcels of conservation land.  He was also a member of the Board of Appeals and a Town Meeting Member for many years.

March 2, 2013 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Otis Brown, a former member of the Lexington Board of Selectmen and many other Town Committees over many years.

December 14, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of all the children and adults who lost their lives in a shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

October 14, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered for Margery Milne Battin'smemorial service.  She was the Town Moderator for 22 years, a leader in town government, and a passionate and staunch community organizer and advocate for over 60 years.

October 12, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Daniel Lucas, who was a U.S. Army Korean War Veteran and also a member of Lexington Rotary Club, a former Town Meeting Member and the Fund for Lexington Board.

July 23-July 25, 2012 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered by Proclamation of President Obama and Governor Patrick in honor and respect of the victims of the violence on July 20, 2012 in Aurora, Colorado.

May 17, 2012- The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Allan F. Kenney a longtime resident of Lexington.  Mr. Kenney served on the Board for Selectmen from 1967-1976. Mr. Kenney served as Chairman during the bicentennial celebration of 1975 and presided on the Green when President Ford visited Lexington. He was a member of the Appropriations Committee and was the recipient of Lexington White Ticorn Hat in recognition of his service to the Town.

March 1, 2012- The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Robert V. Whitman who served as a member of Town Meeting for 37 years. Mr. Whitman also served as chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals, the Permanent Building Committee, and most recently, of the Residents' Association at Brookhaven.

February 23 & 24, 2012- The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Richard L. Bechtela longtime resident of Lexington. Mr. Bechtel was a member of the Historic Districts Commission from 1994-1999.

December 19, 2011- The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Paul Riffin who served as a member of Town Meeting for 19 years. Mr. Riffin also served as Conservation Commissioner and coordinator of Lexington's Community Gardens for 25 years.

December 15, 2011- The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Mary McDonough, who worked for the Town of Lexington for 45 years, from 1941-1986. Ms. McDonough served as Town Clerk from 1968 until her retirement in 1986.

December 15, 2011- The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Firefighter Jon D. Davies Sr. of the Worcester Fire Department who died in the line of duty on Thursday, December 8, 2011.

November 30 and December 1, 2011 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Jere Frick, a resident of Lexington since 1954 and known for her service to the Town and its citizens, including being a member of the Conservation Commission from 1968 until 2008.

September 11, 2011 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered for the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

June 15, 2011 - The Battle Green Flag is lowered in honor of Jack Marquis, retired DPW Water Department employee and veteran of the Navy and Army National Guard.

January 11, 2011-January 14, 2011 - The Battle Green Flag is lowered in honor of the victims of the shooting in Tucson, Arizona.

December 31, 2010 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Woburn Police Officer Maguire who was killed in the line of duty during a robbery.

September 11, 2010 - The Battle Green Flag is lowered in honor of September 11, 2001.

July 1, 2010 - The Battle Green Flag is lowered in memory of Larry Whipple, a resident for 75 years and the unofficial town historian.

March 26, 2010 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of James Barry and Donald Gillespie, two long-time very involved Lexington residents.

December 21, 2009 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Police Sgt. Edward O'Brien.

November 6 - November 11, 2009 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of the victims of the Fort Hood tragedy.

November 6, 2009 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in memory of Molly Eisenberg, a Lexington native who died in October of Ovarian Cancer.

August 26, 2009 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Senator Kennedy, who passed away on August 25, 2009.

May 15, 2009 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Roland Landry, a Lexington resident and veteran, who passed away on January 27, 2009 and was buried on May 15.

January 14, 2009 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered  in honor of firefighter Lt. Kevin M. Kelley of Quincy who died in the line of duty.

October 29, 2008 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Alan Wilson who passed away.

September 6, 2008 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of Mark Moore who passed away.

May 15, 2008 - The Battle Green Flag was lowered in honor of National Police Week (May 11 to May 17, 2008).
