The Community Choice program provides participating residents and businesses with electricity partially or completely generated from renewable resources.
Our new rates will be less expensive than Eversource’s Basic Service rate for January through June of 2019
Lexington’s Community Choice program has selected a new electricity supplier for the next 24 months, resulting in prices that will provide immediate savings compared to Eversource’s projected Basic Service price for the first half of 2019.
“Lexington’s Community Choice program has been a wonderful success for the community,” said Lexington Town Manager Jim Malloy. “With more than 10,000 residents and businesses participating, we estimate the program has reduced Lexington’s electricity emissions by 30%, while saving Lexington customers over $2.3 million through December 2018. Our goal is to provide long term price stability for our community by providing a new fixed electricity supply price for the next 24 months.”
The program includes three offerings:
- 100% Green
Default progam; provides 100% renewable electricity and includes 5% additional renewable electricity from renewable energy projects in New England (MA Class I RECs), in addition to the minimum amount required by the State of Massachusetts.
- New England Green
Provides 100% MA Class I renewable electricity, all from renewable energy projects in New England.
Includes only the minimum amount of renewable electricity required by state law.
Eversource expects to raise their Basic Service rates for January – June 2019 to $0.13794 /kWh.
Lexington’s 100% Green Community Choice offering, which is the option most Lexington customers are enrolled in, will change to $0.11624 /kWh, or about 2 cents per kWh (15%) lower than Eversource’s Basic Service rate.
An average Lexington customer using 750 kWh of electricity a month would save about $15.60 per month for the first half of 2019 compared to Eversource Basic Service rates for that period. These program savings cannot be guaranteed for future periods.
Lexington’s New England Green option, which provides 100% Class I renewable electricity from projects located in New England, will change to $0.12428 /kWh or about 10% lower than the Eversource Basic Service rate. An average Lexington customer using 750 kWh of electricity a month would save about $9.50 per month for the first half of 2019 compared to Eversource Basic Service rates for that period.
“We are pleased to announce that the program provides a unique opportunity for Lexington customers to take an even bigger step toward sustainability,” said Mark Sandeen, Chair of Sustainable Lexington. “Program participants can now upgrade to the New England Green option, receive 100% local renewable electricity that was all generated in New England, and still save money compared with Eversource’s Basic Service. Making this choice will encourage the development of new renewable energy projects in New England and the jobs that go with them.”
If you wish to enroll in New England Green, call Constellation at 1-844-813-7876.
Active participants in Lexington’s Community Choice program do not need to take any action to participate in the new electricity supply agreement with Constellation. All active program participants will be automatically enrolled into the new program with their first meter read after December 15, 2018, and they will see the new prices on their January 2019 electricity bills. Anyone who is not currently active in the program and wishes to enroll can contact Constellation directly at 1-844-813-7876.
The new prices will apply to all rate classes, including residential, commercial, and industrial, and will be in effect from the first meter read after December 15, 2018, until the first meter read after December 15, 2020. During that time, Eversource’s Basic Service price will change, and may at times be lower than Lexington’s Community Choice program prices. Lexington’s Community Choice program prices will only affect the supply portion of participants’ electricity bills. Delivery charges will be unaffected by this agreement. The program goal is to deliver savings when compared with the average of Eversource’s Basic Service prices over the 24-month term of the agreement, however, savings cannot be guaranteed. Lexington’s Community Choice participants always have the right to leave, or opt out, of the program at any time with no penalty.
Lexington’s Community Choice program is an electricity aggregation, which is a form of group purchasing in which a city or town selects an electricity supplier on behalf of its residents and businesses. The goal of the program is to provide the potential for cost savings as well as price stability and strong consumer protections for electricity customers in Lexington. The program also provides a town-vetted alternative to Eversource’s Basic Service and to other electricity supply offers in the marketplace.
