After proceeding through the process outlined in Chapter 78 of the Code of Lexington (the NCD enabling legislation), the Pierce-Lockwood Neighborhood Conservation District was accepted by the 2018 spring Town Meeting.
The NCD includes 15 homes, bounded by Massachusetts Avenue, Tower Park, the Minuteman Bikeway and Maple Street.
Most of the land in the NCD was originally part of the Pierce-Lockwood estate and was subdivided in 1928. It was conveniently located adjacent to the Boston & Maine Railroad with service into Boston. The Pierces Bridge Station was located behind what is currently 11 and 15 Byron Avenue. Aside from the two 1800s federal style homes, the neighborhood is primarily bungalows and Dutch colonials.
The residents of the NCD strongly believe that both the 1800s and 1920s architecture, and the part that the neighborhood played in the economic development of the area, are strong reasons for its preservation.
